Getting Started with INHALE 3

INHALE 3 Getting Started Guide

Welcome to the INHALE by OVR. The Inhale Wellness Platform combines the benefits of:

  • Multi-sensory (with an emphasis on olfaction) virtual reality nature experiences

  • Mindfulness and mood states

  • Guided meditation breath-work

The result is incredibly immersive VR experiences designed to promote relaxation and general well-being.

Please Remember to read the full INHALE Documentation Section, and the ION User Documentation, Including the Health and Safety Warnings.

The Hand controllers

Inhale 3 will use only a few buttons on the hand controller. It is important to note that your hand controller may look different, as these vary from manufacturer to manufacturer and from model to model, but they all will have buttons that look similar or have the same names/functions as these:

  • The trigger. The trigger, by your pointer finger, is used to select things but pointing at them and pulling the trigger.

  • The grip button. The grip button located on the controller body is used to grab things and is activated by your fingers holding the controller by squeezing them such as when you make a fist.

  • The A & B or X & Y buttons, which are the raised buttons on the left and right controllers will all bring up or dismiss the menu screen(s).

  • The home button. There is a "home" button (usually, slightly recessed -- also known as the pico or oculus button depending on your headset) this can be used to reset your "center" (position long press) or exit the application (short press). You can also exit the application and reset your center position from the menu screens.

Create a play boundary

Create a play boundary by drawing a safe play space in an open area, as you approach the boundary’s edge a grid will appear to let you know you are leaving the defined area. For more information please refer to the documentation that came with the headset.

Launching and Navigating INHALE

To launch the INHALE app, simply select “INHALE 3” from the Home Screen by pointing at it and pulling the trigger to start your session. INHALE will attempt to connect to your ION automatically at launch.

Please turn your ION on (see above) before launching the INHALE 3 application.

This home screen also has quick access to some information and settings for the headset and controllers via the icon menus below the "Library" window, these include, (from left to right) date & time, power levels for the headset and each controller (hover for exact %), WiFi settings, boundary / playspace settings, casting the headset vision to a compatible external screen, and a "three dots" icon for accessing additional controller & headset settings.

Staying Up-to-Date

It is important to use the Network Icon on the right-hand side of the home screen to enter your WiFi network settings. Keeping the headset on a WiFi network will make sure you are alerted if updates are available for your headset or the INHALE application. In some cases, these critical updates will install automatically making sure you are always on the latest and most stable versions of the Pico Interactive and OVR Technology software updates.

Connecting to the ION

As stated above INHALE, will attempt to automatically connect to your ION device upon launch. If your ION was not turned on, does not auto-connect, or you accidentally connected to the incorrect ION, you can make this connection from the "pairing" sections of the main menu. (See Menu section below)

If your ION is not powered on or has trouble connecting, you will see a warning that an ION cannot be found. If your ION does not automatically connect or you need to manually connect a different ION, via the "Pairing" section of the settings menu.

If you have multiple IONs, a "best practice" is to launch IHNALE and power up IONs one at a time. If there are multiple IONs on, INHALE attempts to connect to the last ION it was connected to, or if only one ION is found it will connect to it. Otherwise, you may have to manually connect to the correct ION.

The Inhale Session Selection/Lobby Screens

Upon launching you are taken to the Inhale session selection screen. Some folks refer to this as the “Lobby.” There are two lobby experiences. The "Guided" and the "Grid" selection experiences.

The Guided Selection Experience

The first one we call the "Guided Experience", (see images below) where INHALE will ask you a series of three questions about the Inhale session you would like to start. These questions are asked one after the other, and the user must make a selection and hit next to get to the next question.

The Grid Selection Experience

The second experience is called the "Grid Experience" (see image below) where each of the choices for the three selections are presented on the same screen, and once the user has selected one item from each row they can move right to the experience. By default, the guided experience (above) is presented the first time the application launches, and the grid is presented each time you return to the lobby after your first session.

Please note the user can select which selection experience runs the first time through INHALE (Guided, by default) and each subsequent time (Grid, by default). This can be set in the Player section of the settings menu. (See settings section below)

If you spend some time in the selection lobby, you will notice that the background will rotate between day and night over the course of a few minutes.

The user will make their session selections (Mood/Scent, Location, and Guided Mediation) by pointing at their desired selection and pulling the trigger. Once a mood, scene, and meditation selection are made, you can begin your session.

Mood State & Scent or Mood "Orbs"

At the heart of the INHALE 3 experience are the "Mood Orbs." Each of these orbs has a unique color and scent, and will drive a mood-specific meditation track if desired. The Mood Scent Orbs were designed to be pleasant, but not immediately familiar, helping to foster their desired outcome state. As the user engages with INHALE sessions, new scent memories and relationships between the desired mood (for example De-stress) and the associated scent (and guided mediation) will help foster the desired outcome and begin to form a new scent connection between the OVR scent of “de-stress” and a more stress-free mood.

  • Selecting the "blue" orb will produce a meditation track and unique scent formulated to help reduce stress.

  • The "green" orb will produce a meditation track and unique scent formulated to increase calm and/or focus.

  • The "orange" orb will produce a meditation track and unique scent formulated to foster deep relaxation.

Choosing your meditation scene

INHALE is built around realistic nature scenes. They are: Shore, Mountian Summit, and Waterfall.

You can choose to meditate by the shoreline...

or meditate by a running waterfall...

or meditate on a mountain top.

Choosing the Guided Mediation Track

The Guided mediation track is associated with the mood state or orb that you selected for your session. There are mediation tracks were designed to foster each of the desired mood outcomes, in both a Long (approximately 10 minutes) and Shorter (approximately 5 minutes) variations. You can also choose not to have a guided meditation track, and enjoy the nature scene in "peace." There is a user setting to auto-start (or not) the guided meditation (if chosen) in the player settings menu. By default, this setting is set to auto-start the mediation track when the scene begins. You can easily start or stop the mediation (if a meditation track was selected) via the menu, If the meditation is playing the first menu item will be "Stop Meditating" if the mediation track is paused, stopped, or concluded, the first menu item will be "Start Meditating."

The Menu and Adjusting Player Settings

The Main Menu is always a button press away. Hitting the "A" or "B" keys on the right-hand controller, or the "X" or "Y" button on the left-hand controller will bring up the Settings menu. From the menu you can:

  • Start or Stop a Mediation (Note: only available within the scene locations)

  • Return to the selection lobby (not available when in the selection lobby - you are already there)

  • Adjust Settings (note: some settings can be turned down, but cannot be turned up past the maximum settings on the hardware - you may want to check these hardware settings first)

    • Master Audio volume or individually for the ambient or meditation audio tracks. Adjust by sliding the value slider left or right to the desired values.

    • Master Scent intensity or for the individual ambient or orb scents. Adjust by sliding the value slider left or right to the desired values.

    • Additional Player Preferences

      • Player Height and Reach, control how far away from the user the orbs and other items appear (adjust if things are too close or too far.) Adjust by sliding the value slider left or right to the desired values.

      • Reset VR Origin (similar to doing a long press on the home button, re-centers the VR experience around the user's current position in the VR playspace.

      • Enable Mediation Auto-start, on by default, turn off you would like to manually start the mediation, rather than automatically when you enter the scene. Edit the setting by toggling the dot on the right side to on or off.

      • Launch lobby style, Guided by default, (see image above) when the INHALE app launches users will be presented with the guided (3 sequential questions asking them to pick a mood scent, location, and mediation). This initial selection experience can be changed to the grid experience where the user can select all the required variables from one screen. Edit the setting by toggling the dot on the desired experience.

      • Return lobby style, Grid by default, (see image above) when the user selects "Return to Selections" from the menu (each time after the first INHALE launch experience) the user can control if they want the grid (all selections on one screen) or guided (the system will ask a series of questions prompting each selection) experience. Edit the setting by toggling the dot on the desired experience.

  • Pair or connect to an ION or the Administrator Dashboard

    • Use the pair ION menu if you need to connect or reconnect your ION scent device.

    • Note: Administrator Dashboard is an add-on product that will allow a clinician or an outside (VR) administrator to make certain selections and launch scenes for the user in a VR Headset. If you are interested in Administrator Dashboard contact your OVR Sales or Client Representative.
