Connect a USB cord into the USB port located on the left side of the ION, recessed behind the logo. Make sure the USB cable is connected to a power source such as a computer or USB charging plug.
Set the switch on the bottom of the device to "I" to enable the battery and turn the ION device ON. The switch will also need to remain in the "I" position while charging.
If the switch is set to the "0" position the ION Device will not charge.
Generally, the charge time is about 4 hours. The device will remain active while charging so please remove the cartridge and array while playing scent-enabled content that is linked to a particular unit. The ORANGE LED indicator will light up while the device is charging and will turn off when the ION is fully charged.
Peel of the shipping sticker. Slide the cartridge into the ION device with the label side out and the 9 scent actuators facing the inside of the ION device. There is a slot inside the ION that will receive the connector on the side of the cartridge.
In order to mount the ION device to the HMD please pull the elastic strap on the top of the ION over the top of the HMD (as shown above). It should have a relatively tight fit so that it will not fall off with rapid movement, and should also ideally be position so that it is not touching your nose when wearing the HMD. Remember to turn the power switch to the on "1" position before launching your VR Content.
When your device is connected over USB and OVR Engine (see below) is opened, your device will be put into “Configuration / USB Serial Mode” by default and will not be connected to WiFi. Under the configuration tab of the OVR Engine, the grey status indicator will stop flashing in the upper right once the ION is connected and recognized via USB. If you intend to use WiFi please make sure that your computer, the device, and the HMD you are using, are all on the same 2.4ghz wifi network
NOTE: Two or more devices should not be configured with the same “Device Name" while on the same subnet. Furthermore a "Device Name" is currently hardcoded into a build of a piece of content. If you would like to have two devices operating on two headsets running the same piece of content there will have to be two builds of that content accounting for two different "Device names". Otherwise, if both devices are named the same and on the same subnet, they will both receive the same UDP WiFi messages.
In order to test connection over WiFi, unplug your device from your computer after properly configuring it in OVR Engine, then switch the ION device to the on position (indicated by an "I"), then switch to the "Manual Activation Tab". The engine will automatically attempt to connect to the device over WiFi after about 5 - 10 seconds. The RED LED indicator (in the figure above) will blink 5 times a second while the ION is looking for a WiFi network and once connected blink once every second when it is connected. You should also see the RED LED turn solid for 1 second every time the device receives a message over the WiFi network. Once the device is connected to your WiFi network you should be able to press the 1-9 buttons in the "Manual Activation Tab" and see and smell WiFi packets communicated with the ION.
If the device does not receive commands while in WiFi state for more than 5 minutes it will go into "sleep mode". In order to get out of sleep mode, one must toggle the power switch off and then on to reawaken the device.
Note: Please see ourOVR Engine Manual
for more detailed instructions on configuring WiFi credentials, as well as manual activation of the device.
It's important to note that the cartridge contains liquid water and once assembled in the array can evaporate out through the porous metal plates over an extended period of several weeks. Therefore for long-term storage, the cartridge either must be removed/capped and stored, or the cartridge assembly should be stored in a moisture-resistant container such as a very small plastic bag in order to avoid evaporation. Additionally, for long-term storage of the ION device, it is best to charge the battery to around 75% when in order to keep the Li-Mn battery life span optimal.
Download and install OVR Engine
Plug the device into your computer over USB
upon opening OVR Engine the device should connect automatically (indicated by a solid logo in the upper right)
Open OVR Engine to the Configuration Tab in order to set up WiFi credentials
If the status indicator (OVR logo) in the top right of OVR Engine is still flashing, please go to the "Connectivity" section of the OVR Engine manual
In the Configuration Tab, populate the first three lines with your desired network information
SSID, Password, and Device Name.
Make sure the default state is either 3 or WiFi
Click "Upload" and wait for the device to reconnect after it reboots.
Disconnect the device from USB and switch the power button on the bottom of the ION to the on position (indicated by a "I"). At this point, you should see a heartbeat on the red LED about once every second if everything is connected. If the LED is blinking faster or in any other way please see our Device Status States section below.
Click on the Manual Activation Tab at the top
The status indicator will stop flashing in the upper right once connected over WiFi. This should happen 5 -10 seconds after unplugging from USB.
If you are just using USB to manually activate the ION, the connection will stay the same when moving to the Manual activation tab
push some buttons and look for activity on the device.
Note: Please see ourOVR Engine Manual
for more detailed instructions on configuring WiFi credentials, as well as manual activation of the device.
