OVR Vignettes 3 / Demo Kit Setup Guide

This document will provide help for getting started with the OVR Technology Remote Demo Kit featuring the OVR Vignettes demo.

Setting up the OVR ION Device

Please follow the page link below for instructions on setting up your ION Device, Inserting the Scent Cartridge, and attaching the ION to your Headset.

For more information on using the ION Device, see the full ION User Manual.

Inserting the Scentware Cartridge and attaching the ION to the headset

Full instruction on the ION Device page link above

Make sure the cartridge is all the way in the device. When you connect it, you may or may not hear it click into place. If you don't hear the click press firmly, making sure the elastic strap is not bunched up under the cartridge

The Hand controllers

The Demo will use only a few buttons on the hand controller. It is important to note that your hand controller may look different, as these vary from manufacturer to manufacturer and from model to model, but they all will have buttons that look similar or have the same names/functions as these:

  • The trigger. The trigger, by your pointer finger, is used to select things but pointing at them and pulling the trigger.

  • The grip button. The grip button located on the controller body is used to grab things and is activated by your fingers holding the controller by squeezing them such as when you make a fist.

  • The A & B or X & Y buttons, which are the raised buttons on the left and right controllers will all bring up or dismiss the menu screen(s).

  • The home button. There is a "home" button (usually, slightly recessed -- also known as the pico or oculus button depending on your headset) this can be used to reset your "center" (position long press) or exit the application (short press). You can also exit the application and reset your center position from the menu screens.

Create a play boundary

Create a play boundary by drawing a safe play space in an open area, as you approach the boundary’s edge a grid will appear to let you know you are leaving the defined area. For more information please refer to the documentation that came with the headset.

To launch the Demo app, simply select “OVR Vignettes 3” from the Home Screen by pointing at it and pulling the trigger to start your session. The App will attempt to connect to your ION automatically at launch. Please turn your ION on (see above) before launching the Vignettes application.

This home screen also has quick access to some of the headset settings on the right-hand side, these include, (from top to bottom) setting a boundary or playspace, connecting your headset to your WiFi network for app and firmware updates, casting the headset vision to a compatible external screen, and other headset settings which may require an admin access code which OVR will provide if necessary, but should not be needed under normal operating circumstances

If your ION is charged and turned on the demo app will attempt to auto-connect to the ION once it launches, if there are multiple IONs present, it will attempt to connect to the same ION it connected to the last time. Say "OK" or "Yes" to the dialog boxes if the correct ION is presented in the connection dialog box.

There are several scenes in the OVR Vignettes application, from the scene selector point at one of the scene names and pull the trigger to launch it.

Most Scenes have some interactive component, picking flowers, roasting marshmallows, or interacting with the scented mood orbs in the "INHALE" demonstration nature scenes. Remember you can interact with these objects by using the "grip" button on the side of the hand controller.

To move on to the next scene push the "A" (on the right-h controller) or "X" (on the left-hand controller) button which is the raised button closest to your body on the hand controller, This will bring up the scene selector.

The Main Menu is always a button press away. Hitting the "B" keys on the right-hand controller, or the "Y" button on the left-hand controller will bring up the Settings menu. From the menu you can:

  • Scene Selection will bring up the same scene selector as hitting the "A" or "X" keys

  • Adjust Settings (note: some settings can be turned down, but cannot be turned up past the maximum settings on the hardware - you may want to check these hardware settings first)

    • Master Audio volume or individually for the ambient or meditation audio tracks. Adjust by sliding the value slider left or right to the desired values.

    • Master Scent intensity or for the individual ambient or orb scents. Adjust by sliding the value slider left or right to the desired values.

    • Additional Player Preferences

      • Player Height and Reach, control how far away from the user the orbs and other items appear (adjust if things are too close or too far.) Adjust by sliding the value slider left or right to the desired values.

      • Reset VR Origin (similar to doing a long press on the home button, re-centers the VR experience around the user's current position in the VR play space.

  • Pair or connect to an ION or the Administrator Dashboard

    • Use the pair ION menu if you need to connect or reconnect your ION scent device.

    • Note: Administrator Dashboard is an internal OVR product that will allow a clinician or an outside (VR) administrator to make certain selections and launch scenes for the user in a VR Headset. If you are interested in Administrator Dashboard contact your OVR Sales or Client Representative.

  • Get more information about OVR from the About screen.

Ending your session

Pressing the "home" button on the controller, or choosing "Exit App" from the lower left on the Main menu window will exit Vignettes

Charging the Device

Connect a USB cord into the USB port located on the left side of the ION, recessed behind the logo. Make sure the USB cable is connected to a power source such as a computer or USB charging plug.

Cleaning the HMD and Device

(Updated 03/02/2020 with important information regarding disinfectants recommended based on the current SARS-CoV-2 / COVID-19 recommendations.)

Before sending the demo equipment out, be assured OVR Technology has sanitized the HMD (Head Mounted Display) and the ION scent device. Once the demo equipment is returned we will immediately sanitize it again before its next use. OVR Technology has chosen this cleaning product in adherence to recommendations from the EPA on the proper disinfectants against SARS-CoV-2.

We have included a few disposable face-covers that loop over the user’s ears and serve as a barrier between the user’s skin and the headset foam. (See image). These should be disposed of after use and/or should not be shared. Please can return any UNUSED face-covers.

During your use, we recommend that you wipe the mask cushion and inside the ion device between switching users. We have provided some single-use 70% alcohol prep pads in the demo kit you received for wiping down the cushion and inside the device between users. Make sure the whole thing gets nice and damp from the wipes, then leave them to air dry. Don't use your headset until everything is completely dry, or else you're just introducing more microorganisms to an already wet environment.

IMPORTANT: DO NOT USE LIQUID CHEMICAL CLEANSERS OR THE INCLUDED ALCOHOL PREP PADS ON THE HEADSET LENSES / EYE-PIECES. The lenses require special cleaning, which OVR Technology does before sending out the demo kits.

And whatever you do, do not put your headset in direct sunlight to dry. It's tempting, as UV rays are great at disinfecting things, but it will cause irreparable damage to the headset's lenses.
